The reconstruction and extension of the object for conversion – the Museum of the City of Belgrade includes an intervention on the existing object – a cultural asset under previous protection, by the architect Dimitrija Leko from 1899. Bearing in mind the cultural-historical importance of the location located in the central city zone of Belgrade, as well as the importance of the existing building, the reconstruction and formation of the new building was approached while simultaneously respecting the cultural-historical context and contemporary architectural expression. Following the project task, the authors, respecting the existing building, formed an annex in the courtyard part. The connection of the contents of the reconstructed building and the newly designed space was achieved through horizontal communications through corridors, galleries, bridges, as well as a central open staircase with two panoramic elevators. This concept enables the maximum physical and visual accessibility of the largest number of contents and exhibits.
The newly formed three-story structure is intended for the display of permanent and guest exhibition settings and with the opposite surfaces in the reconstructed part it forms a unique whole, partially illuminated by a continuous lantern over the intermediate space. In addition to the exhibition areas, the following facilities are provided in the facility: depots, multifunctional hall, rooms for curatorial activities, conservation workshops, library, meeting and presentation rooms, museum administration, shop, souvenir shop in the entrance area, as well as a cafeteria with a terrace. The design solution activated the inner courtyard with exhibition areas – amphitheatre areas with a multifunctional offer. The author’s engagement included the complete arrangement of the interior space – interior design.
