Residential building Bigovo 3

649.75 ㎡

Bigovo 3 is part of a grouping of three residential buildings on three adjacent plots designed and built in sequences over the course of 15 years [Bigovo 1 (2005); Bigovo 2 (2014); Bigovo 3 (2020-21)]. All the buildings are designed as free-standing and represent autonomous functional sequences, while by processing the parterre in the way of organization of individual plateaus they are connected into a specific whole and in that sense at the conceptual level they form a kind of “architectural triptych”. The last segment of this triptych is the house Bigovo 3.

The structure of the spatial units was formed through two different design principles, both of which represent a response to the climatic characteristics of the space. The first principle treats the apartment unit that is positioned above the main plateau, while the second treats the buried unit of apartment B. The facade of apartment A (the apartment on the upper level of the plateau) is formed as a layered membrane. The first (inner layer) of this membrane represents the real physical boundary of the space, while the second membrane represents a free-standing wall, which facing southwest protects the building from excessive sunlight and makes it pleasant to stay on the terraces and balconies. The second unit, apartment B, was formed by digging below the level of the main plateau, thus forming a pleasant space for staying in the summer next to the water surface of the pool located within the terrace. Descending to the level of apartment B is made possible by an external staircase that forms a small patio, which provides a better ambience and ventilation of the lower unit. Comfortable use of all rooms within the building is possible throughout the year with sustainable use of the air conditioning system.

In accordance with the characteristics of the terrain and the disposition of the buildings, the ground floor solution is designed from a system of retaining walls, plateaus, stairs, paths and green areas. The architectural expression of the building is characterized by the walls of the building and the supporting walls of the ground floor, which are covered with stone slabs, i.e. carved massifs and are partly made of natural concrete.
